Straits Cafe Doncaster

If you fancy Malaysian hawker food Penang style then you should consider paying a visit to Straits Cafe in Doncaster.

Situated at 694 Doncaster Road, this Malaysian cuisine eatery is easily missed if you're not looking for it while you are travelling on Doncaster Road.

I have to mention that this is probably the first place in Melbourne that I've heard a lot of Hokkien chatter from the staff. That's right, the same language the Penang Chinese community uses.

We started the night with an entree of Lor Bak - which are deep fried rolls of minced pork with pepper powder & soy sauce, maybe some other herbs, then rolled in thin soybean sheets.

Straits Cafe Lor Back

This dish is normally served with a bowl of 'Loh' - which is a bowl of thick broth thickened with corn starch and beaten eggs in Penang and a bowl of chilli. However, there is only the option of having it with chilli here, which I didn't mind considering how hard it is to find Lor Bak here in Australia in the first place.

Matt used to work as a waiter at Blue Chillies and he has been raving about the place for ages.

So he decided to take us there for a treat so we could see what he is fussing about.

Blue Chillies is a modern Malaysian restaurant with a jazz, soul, and R&B music atmosphere. It is located just before the busier part of Fitzroy at 182, Brunswick Street.

Man Mo from the outside

Man Mo is a Chinese/Malaysian cuisine restaurant in the heart of New Quay, Docklands.

We were here for dinner with SY's friends - Cheryl, Mark, Jasmine, Jason and Eng Hooi.

From the outside - you'll realise that this is not the average type of Chinese restaurants. The prices on the menu certainly reflects this as well as most of the mains are around $20-$30.

Yum Char at Kuala Lumpur Restaurant

Kuala Lumpur Restaurant serves yum char for lunch during the weekends.

Located at 123 Koornang Rd in Carnegie, this place is just less than 5 minutes by car from Monash University, Caulfield.

I thought it would be the push-trolley style yum char but instead they offered you a menu which you selected what you wanted and then it would be prepared.

I love siu mai - and I think it is one of the most important thing you need to have at every yum char.
